Sunderland Community Transport offers a low cost transport option for voluntary/community groups and not-for-profit organisations in Sunderland and surrounding areas. As a community led, registered charity the transport scheme aims to reduce the risk of social isolation and increase participation in a wide range of activities by providing suitable transport. For over 30 years we have helped sports clubs, schools, faith groups and many other organisations stay on the move.
We began in 1987 with one minibus and we’ve never stopped. The project has grown over the years and is now a registered charity (charity no. 1090604) with three vehicles.
The minibuses are used to enable people who are disadvantaged by poverty, age, ill health or disability to take part in activities, outings, and gain access to opportunities that would otherwise not be open to them.
SMCT aims to remove the barriers which prevent many people from participating in activities due to the lack of suitable transport. Our users have a wide range of needs which make it difficult to use other services.
Our minibuses are not restricted to scheduled routes and passengers are familiar with the vehicles and drivers; this reduces the anxiety of travelling.
